Smith will make his third attempt at becoming a world champion when he travels to Germany to take on Tyrone Zeuge for the WBA 'regular' title this Saturday, live on Sky Sports.
The Liverpudlian has twice fallen short against Arthur Abraham, and also lost to Andre Ward, but will be hopeful that he will soon join fellow Brits James DeGale and George Groves as world titlists.
Groves recently claimed the WBA 'super' belt after a punishing stoppage of Fedor Chudinov to achieve his boyhood dream at the fourth time of asking and now he is backing Smith to take his golden opportunity.
Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports, Groves, who defeated 'Smigga' back in 2011, said: "This is a great opportunity for Smith and I genuinely wish him well.
"Of course he is going to take this fight. The German fans have seen him lose twice to Abraham so he has a good enough reputation in Germany.
"It might even be better than his reputation over here, so of course they are going to look to make this fight with Zeuge, it makes complete sense.
"Now Smith has got to get his head down, get screwed on because he hasn't got years left in him, but if he wins this, it will open up doors for him.
"He's been a great ambassador for our sport and is good for British boxing, so if he does pull this off and become a world champion, no-one can take that away from him."
Paul Smith vs Tyron Zeuge is live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 9pm on Saturday, then Andre Ward vs Sergey Kovalev II is live on Sky Sports 1 HD from 2am on Sunday morning.
