The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has called on residents of Savelugu to desist from continually preventing their Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) from working.
The Minister also urged the media to do its part to educate the irate youth who have been protesting against the approved MCE.
Speaking at a one-day National Validation Workshop on Draft Fee-Fixing Guidelines, Hajia Mahama said “the MCE has been confirmed so I expect the media people to educate the people to know that the woman has been confirmed. In fact, she was confirmed on the first try.”
Since her confirmation in May, the MCE, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, has not reported to work because some residents, led by New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency executives have refused to allow her step foot in her office.
The Minister, however said these protests were unwarranted given their assembly representatives endorsed Hajia Ayishetu Seidu for the slot.
“Effectively, she is the Municipal chief executive of Savelugu so people should relax, accept her and let her go about her business to provide the governance that they require,” the Minister said.
he angry Savelugu residents have staged a number of demonstrations against the Hajia Ayishetu Seidu, and have vowed to prevent her from occupying the office even at the peril of their lives. According to them, she’s an alien who played no role in the party’s victory.
They have also accused her of paying for her confirmation. The protesters have said they are not bothered by the security implications of their actions, since they believe they are in the interest of the Savelugu-Nantong Municipality.
