N/R: Group vows to prevent MCE from assuming office Featured

A group of angry residents in Savelugu who staged a demonstration against the assumption of office of the elected Municipal Chief Executive, Hajia Ayishetu Seidu have vowed to prevent her from occupying the office even at the peril of their lives.

According to them, she bribed assembly members to secure their mandate after her nomination by the President.

A member of the group and the New Patriotic Party Kugafom Polling Station Organiser, Abdul Karim Zakaria in an interview on Eyewitness News argued that the MCE was not a committed member of the party and did not cast her vote in any of the constituencies in the Municipality.

“A stranger has been imposed on us. We shall not countenance Hajia Ayishetu Seidu to be our MCE. We are prepared to sacrifice our lives to defend the NPP party in Savelugu and to defend the whole Savelugu Nanton constitution from strangers. She has bribed her way through and the constitution of Ghana frowns seriously on corruption. She has started with corruption, if she settles down, you can imagine what she will do,” he said.

He added that the group was not bothered about the security implications of its actions since it believes they were in the interest of the Savelugu-Nantong Municipality.

Hundreds of residents of the Savelugu-Nantong Municipality including some NPP constituency executives demonstrated for the third time on Monday against her confirmation.

They held placards with inscriptions such as “Go back Hajia,” “We don’t know Hajia,” “We will never accept her,” “Nana Hajia Alima Mahama is misleading you” among others.

In a petition submitted to the Municipal Coordinating Director, they maintained that she is an alien in both Savelugu and Nantong constituencies for which reason she should be replaced.

But the Northern Regional Secretary of the party, Sulley Salifu has rejected these claims.

He is therefore calling for calm about the members of the group.

According to him, the party’s leadership in the region is holding series of crucial meetings to resolve the impasse amicably.

“Let me appeal to my brother and sisters in Savelugu to allow cool heads to prevail. I will plead that we do not make allegations of crime against ourselves,” Sulley Salifu said in an interview on Eyewitness News.

The embattled MCE received 50 out of 64 assembly members YES votes to confirm her as the MCE.

Series of protests have been staged against her nomination and subsequent confirmation, but the assembly members say it will not affect her work.
