Teaching regulatory body gets new council Featured

The Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has inaugurated a 15-member council of the National Teaching Council (NTC) with a charge on them to put in place policies, guidelines and programmes for

the attainment of the highest professional standards for teachers.

“Your vision as the council of the NTC must be to ensure the production of efficient, effective, dedicated and well-motivated teachers for our schools who can measure up to international standards,” he said.

Board members

The Council,  chaired by Professor Eric Nyarko-Sampson include Mr Alex Agyekum, Bishop Cyril Kobina Ben-Smith and Dr Lucy Acheampong, all government nominees. The others are Dr Evelyn Owusu Oduro, NTC, Mr Isaac Biney Nsarko, Ministry of Education, Professor Kwame Osei Kwarteng representing the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah from COTVET and Mrs Rosetta Addition Sackey from the National Inspectorate Board (NIB).

The rest are Madam Margaret Frimpong-Kore representing the Conference of the District Directors of Education, Rev. Sister Elizabeth Amoako-Arhen of the Conference of Heads of Colleges of Education, Mr Thomas Kofi Arboh of the Conference of Managers of Education, Prof. George Kankam of the University of Education Winneba, Mr Thomas Baafi from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and Mr Stanislus P. Nabome from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).

Mandate of the council

Dr Prempeh reminded the members that their support in ensuring the success of the initiatives of the educational sector was crucial, “ through your promotion and implementation of effective, innovative, efficient policies to improve upon teacher quality.

“In particulars, I urge you to focus on teacher licensing and registration, providing directions for the deployment of teachers and the attainment of the highest professional standards for teachers in the country,” he urged the council.

Dr Prempeh reminded them that a key mandate of the council was to advise the Minister of Education on the professional standing of teachers and on teacher education including facilities and institutions for continuous professional development.

Quality professionals

Dr Prempeh said the Council had the onerous responsibility to ensure the training and production of quality and disciplined teachers.

He noted that the quality of the educational delivery system would determine the quality of the professionals that were eventually produced.

The Chairman of the Council, Prof Nyarko-Sampson thanked the President and the ministry for nominating them to serve the country and assured that the members of the council would work to justify the trust reposed in them.

He said the council was going to work within the confines of its mandate to ensure that those in the classroom, were truely professional teachers.
