Apple quietly spelt the end of two of its most popular devices at its Worldwide Developer's Conference on Monday night.

The company announced the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 11, at the annual event, introducing a new phone-to-phone payment method and a safe driving mode. It also features a tweaked design for the iPad that looks more like the Mac operating system.

But iOS 11 comes with a caveat. It only works on 64-bit devices, meaning that older Apple products will not be able to upgrade to the new system, rendering them obsolete.

Affected devices include the iPhone 5, released in 2012, and the iPhone 5c, released in 2013. These phones won't receive security updates and some apps and games will stop working on them.

The iPad 4, released in 2012, is also excluded from the list of devices that can upgrade to the new software when it is released in the Autumn.

In addition to the four-year-old products becoming obsolete, the change means some older apps and games that are only 32-bit will stop working on devices running iOS 11.

Users can check which of their installed apps are compatible with the new operating system by going to Settings > General > About > Applications. Apple will prompt users to upgrade apps built on the old system where there is an update available.

The new iMac is (sort of) upgradable

Apple often makes make it near impossible to upgrade its computers, and its new iMac isn’t officially upgradeable, either. Whatever

specs you buy it with is probably what you’re going to have until you buy a new one. But these new iMacs do have a few components you can swap out for something better — if you’re brave enough.

iFixit tore apart a new iMac and found that it has removable RAM and a modular CPU. This is the first iMac to have a modular CPU since 2012 and expandable memory since 2013. While iFixit is pretty psyched about these developments, it doesn’t mean these upgrades will be easy to accomplish for the average user.

iFixit says the iMac is very difficult to take apart, and gives an overall low score for repairability, but at least it’s possible now. If you’re an enterprising and adventurous iMac user, you could theoretically take apart your $1,100 computer and make it better. Good luck, and check out that RAM:

For years, the most important date in Apple’s calendar has been a morning in early September, the annual showcase at which a new iPhone is first revealed to an expectant public.

Apple revolves around the all-powerful iPhone, which comprises almost two thirds of the company’s $218bn (£169bn) in annual sales. A brilliant new feature, or a disappointing launch, sets the tone for the rest of the year, as well as most likely deciding its fate.
