An Ubuntu version of the Intel Compute stick will go on sale next week costing $110.
The unit is similar to the Windows and Linux versions of the device that were unveiled at the start of the year at CES, but will run Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and is powered by an Intel Atom quad-core processor.
The Compute Stick can be plugged into the HDMI input on a monitor or flat-screen TV to turn it into a fully functioning computer that can interact with wireless routers, keyboard and mouse, stream media and play games.
Intel described the device as an ideal way for workers to stay productive wherever they are by being able to access key files, tools and the web from almost any location.
However, the Ubuntu version does not have the same level of specs as the Windows version. It has 1GB of memory compared with 2GB and 8GB of onboard storage compared with 32GB on the Windows version.
Both models have WiFi and Bluetooth for connectivity, a USB port to connect peripherals and a micro SD card slot to boost storage.
Jane Silber, chief executive of Canonical Group, said it was great to see Ubuntu becoming “part of the Compute Stick family”.
“Consumers are looking for a more personal, flexible and cost-effective computing experience, and also looking for a choice of OS,” she said.
“This is another example of how we’re working with Intel to bring a wide range of devices to market to give as many people as possible the chance to discover Ubuntu.”
Joel Christensen, general manager of Intel NUC (Next Unit of Computing) and Compute Stick products, heralded the unit as another “milestone” in the firm’s ongoing work with Canonical.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our latest product, the Intel Compute Stick with Ubuntu, to our customers. I’m excited for the possibilities this combination will create in the marketplace," he said.
USB stick-sized computing gizmos are becoming popular owing to their portability and ease of access. Lenovo recently unveiled a Windows 10-ready ideacentre Stick 300 device that can be paired with a wireless keyboard and mouse.
