Ghana: NADMO seeks medical treatment for victims of expired cooking oil -U/W Featured

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have assured that it will seek proper medical treatments for residents in the Upper West Region who have eating the expired cooking oil which were supplied.

NADMO said it has not heard of any complaints from the residents after eating of the expired cooking oil but it will move to these communities and conduct search on who have consume the oil to ascertain their health status.

NADMO admitted it erroneously added some expired cooking oil to food items presented to flood victims in Wa over the weekend by the Vice President, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

NADMO has on Tuesday September 25, accordingly initiated a move to immediately withdraw the expired cooking oil and supply the flood victims with new ones.

NADMO explained that the expired cooking oil had been isolated at the NADMO warehouse in Wa, awaiting authentication by the internal auditor before they could be disposed-off.

However, when loading boys were picking the items for distribution to the flood victims, they erroneously picked six expired cooking oil and added them to the items.

Speaking in an interview with  on Wednesday, the Director of Communications at NADMO, George Ayisi, said “NADMO is returning to these areas and communities”.

“We have not heard anybody has eating the oil and has fallen sick as a result, but we are not taken the issue for granted. We shall take them [victims] to the hospital”, he explained.

He said “it was only six cartons of oil that were mixed up and we are returning to the areas again to ascertain the situation”.

Officers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Upper West Region have called for investigations into how the food items distributed by Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia to flood victims in the region have turned out to be expired products.

Cooking oil and rice were among food items distributed to flood victims in Wa and Sissala East Municipalities by the Vice President during his visit to the Region on Saturday.

But while some of the cooking oil sighted  had September 09, 2018 as expiry date, the rice did not have any expiry date at all.

Reports suggest that some beneficiaries of the items have since complained about having suffered various health conditions, including stomach upset, upon the consumption of the food items.
